The brief

Van Doesburg is transitioning to electric trucks. That transition requires certainty: charging must always be available. However, the existing grid connection did not provide sufficient capacity, while a grid upgrade was not feasible in the short term. At the same time, Van Doesburg wanted to begin electrification without a major upfront investment or additional responsibilities for management and maintenance.

The challenge was clear: how do you charge multiple electric trucks intelligently and reliably within the limits of the existing grid connection?

Key objectives for Van Doesburg:

  • Continuous charging without grid reinforcement
  • Full-service support for investment, management and maintenance
  • Flexibility for future expansion and commercial use of the charging hub

The approach

We began with an in-depth analysis of the charging profile, available grid capacity and on-site solar generation. Based on these insights, we designed a solution in which battery storage acts as an intelligent buffer between the solar installation, the grid and the charging infrastructure.

The system consists of three modular battery units. During the day, solar energy is stored and supplemented with grid power whenever capacity is available. During peak demand, the battery system supplies additional power, enabling multiple trucks to charge simultaneously.

The charging hub features a charger with two charging points that automatically distributes the available power. During daytime hours, the charging facilities can also be used by third parties. The entire system is continuously managed by an Energy Management System (EMS), which intelligently balances energy consumption and charging demand.

As Van Doesburg wanted to begin electrification without financial or technical concerns, the project was delivered through an operational lease model. Steddion financed the complete solution, including installation, monitoring and maintenance of both the battery system and charging infrastructure. Van Doesburg pays a fixed monthly fee — transparent, predictable and without unexpected costs.

Results

Van Doesburg can now electrify its fleet without limitations from the grid and without financial barriers. The combination of operational leasing, battery storage and smart charging provides:

  • Reliable charging for electric trucks, even during peak demand
  • Optimal use of solar energy and available grid capacity
  • Complete peace of mind for investment, management and maintenance
  • Additional flexibility and revenue opportunities through public charging

A solution that delivers today and grows alongside tomorrow’s ambitions.

“Our electric trucks were ready for operation, but the grid connection was not. Thanks to Steddion’s lease model and battery system, we are less dependent on the grid while maintaining financial flexibility.”
