Schotpoort

Schotpoort Transport Groep is a logistics service provider with a long history and a clear view of the future. From its base in Eerbeek, the company is actively working to decarbonise its fleet, with electric driving as the natural next step.

As Schotpoort moved to scale up further, it ran into a familiar challenge. The grid connection did not offer enough headroom, while 3,000 solar panels were generating more than enough renewable energy. The question was clear. How do you use solar power and grid capacity more intelligently, so charging remains continuously available and the system is ready for further growth?

The brief

Schotpoort recognised early on that electric driving is the future. The first electric trucks could charge without any issues, but as the fleet expanded, the grid connection proved insufficient. At the same time, 3,000 solar panels were already in place on the roof. The challenge was not the amount of electricity available, but how to use it intelligently.

Schotpoort’s key objectives:

  • Make more efficient use of solar power and grid capacity
  • Deliver a stable, future-ready energy supply
  • Make the charging infrastructure publicly accessible

The approach

We chose a strategic approach to use Schotpoort’s energy as efficiently as possible. The goal was clear: ensure charging is always available without overloading the grid. We therefore began with an analysis of the energy infrastructure, energy use, and the company’s strategic objectives.

Based on this, we developed a charging hub with a 500 kW battery and a capacity of 1,100 kWh, combined with a mini-grid and a smart energy management system. This allows Schotpoort to make the most of both the available grid capacity and the output of its 3,000 solar panels.

Results

The battery uses surplus grid capacity when it is available and makes maximum use of solar energy. The energy system is deployed flexibly:

  • At night, Schotpoort charges its own electric trucks
  • During the day, the charging hub is publicly accessible to third parties
  • Up to 18 trucks can charge each day, 10 of them simultaneously without placing extra load on the grid

This makes charging reliable, sustainable, and future-ready, with minimal impact on the energy grid and maximum value for Schotpoort and the surrounding area.

“Taking a first step by purchasing an electric truck with the help of the AanZET subsidy is a good move today. But it is also important to think carefully about the energy demand that comes with further scaling up. Steddion can help you answer that question.”
